There are several organizations in and around the DC Metro area and Northern Virginia who are chomping at the bit to help you 
save money on your remodel. If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, Habitat for Humanity or Second Chances, may be a great resource for you to both help your local community, get a write off, and save money on the demolition of your renovation. Often times, the demolition, or demo as the general contractors will call it, will be one of the highest priced items on the line items for your renovation. Interestingly enough, if the cabinets, fixtures and even counters are in good enough shape, the non-profits can come in, do the demolition work for you, often at no cost, and will give you the opportunity to write off the donation of the items they are able to take an utilize in their sales center!
For very large scale demo, where you are more or less gutting a home or tearing it down, Habitat or Second Chances are good options. Second Chances brings about opportunities for unemployed and underemployed folks by training them in the art of deconstruction methods and then allowing for the sale of the salvageable items and creating a green economy. It is a really neat non-profit.
