Hurricane Preparedness

We have certainly been getting the brunt of rain and storms this year. It has been noted that the Northern Virginia area has received more than three times the yearly average just this summer! We are about to brace for another round of storms as hurricane Florence heads towards the eastern seaboard and central Virginia.

We have seen the National Weather Association post notes about significant winds and storm surge, so what does this mean for us in Northern Virginia as home owners? We can prepare our homes by trimming trees away from our rooftops, clear gutters so that water will not pour on foundations, use gutter hoses to take rain water away from foundations, and some of these other great tips that Realtor.com has put together.

Hurricane #Florence is currently a 130-mph Category 4 hurricane. After completing an eyewall replacement cycle this morning, it will likely intensify further and possibly into a Category 5 hurricane later today or tonight. Florence will then make landfall near the North Carolina/South Carolina border as either a Category 3 or 4 hurricane Thursday night/Friday morning. Storm surge is a big threat, and water levels have already been rising. The worst of the surge is currently forecast to be from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout where 6-12 feet of inundation is expected. Heavy rain and flash flooding will be another major threat, both at the coast and inland. Some towns may receive over 3 feet of rain between now and early-next week as Florence stalls inland due to weak steering winds. Lastly, the strongest of winds will take place at the immediate coast, but wind damage is also expected inland as gusts potentially exceed hurricane-force. Prepare now, evacuate if told to do so, and stay safe. All preparations should be rushed to completion by Wednesday. www.hurrtracker.com
