A dozen Arlingtonians gather to plant trees on Saturday May, 1st.
In honor of National Arbor Day, I teamed up with the Arlington County Parks and Recreation Department on behalf of Arbour Realty to start a new woodland space in the heart of Arlington, Virginia. The clear blue skies and ever so slight breeze could not have been better if it had been hand selected for a day of getting trees planted. Patrick Wegeng with the Arlington County Parks and Recreation Landscaping division gave a brief introduction to our group describing the latest tree planting effort; “…what we are looking to do here is create a woodland space. We had to clear this space to remove all of the invasive species, but now we are going to get over one hundred native species. There will be Pin Oaks, 
dogwoods and redbuds planted on berms.” The County naturalists selected these trees to be planted to ensure that natives species are re-established in the area. They take care to avoid invasive plants and non-natives so that the plants are sure to take- not take over. The site was covered in English Ivy that had to be chopped out of the existing trees so that they would not be strangled out.
Over a dozen community members committed to this tree planting endeavor. The brokerage philosophy of healthy living through the sharing of knowledge and having events such as this community building tree planting party shine in the company’s green commitment. Armed with gardening gloves, and comfortable shoes, Arbour Realty’s team and their friends and vendor partners arrived at the newly filled corner lot of 26th Street and Old Dominion in Arlington directly across from the Marymount University new construction and library. The site had originally been a residence, but had been purchased by the County in order to create a new green space. Each of the volunteers grabbed shovels and pick-axes to dig dozens of three by three holes to place five year old Pin Oak trees in first. After about three hours of hard work, the volunteer team started opening the burlap root balls for the trees to make themselves comfortable in their new ground.
Making the Arlington Community a better place, a little bit at a time is what Arbour Realty is all about.
