Taking a deeper look at the top things that make us happy in our homes.
Early last week, I was at a meeting with a handful of eco-professional colleagues that I meet with on a weekly basis in Ballston and we started discussing what the sustainability aspect of our businesses meant and what it means to our clients. It was interesting to hear everyone’s input, but out of everyone, someone said something that rang out.
A very bright mind, an architect in Arlington VA, in fact said that she feel that the balance she helps her clients achieve in harmony with their home and nature is what she feels sustainability is. She said that what she helps her clients achieve in their quest to a more comfortable and healthy home, is actually a little piece of happiness.
Some people take hard-core approach to environmental action and healthy living, and others take the more consultative and educational approach. We all know that we need to make more healthy choices in our everyday lives, but it doesn’t have to be to a harsh degree. The idea of having someone on your side to help guide you to a place where you can be healthy and happy in your home is a really neat thing. Having a person to lean on to answer questions about functionality, sustainability and durability can take a lot of pressure off of such a large project such as building a home, or remodeling an existing one.
I am glad that this brilliant architect brought up sustainable building and her part as a consultant to her clients as a happiness consultant, in essence. Not litterally, of course… I like to think that Ecobrokers do the same thing. They are like an educational tool or resource that can help guide their clients to the happy place of buying their own home, and knowing that they have made healthier choices for themselves and their environment.
Creating comfort and health can equate to happiness. Maybe, it can equate for some of us as a deeper sense of connectedness and balance with ourselves and nature. I thought it was a neat concept and it made me wonder what others think of this idea and what it means for how we live in our homes. What does sustainability mean to you for yourself, your community and your family? Do you think that when you feel like you’ve made healthier choices for yourself and your planet that you are maybe a bit more happy in the scheme of things? When I saw my dentist today, he was telling me stories about how he and his wife have been married for over thirty years. She is originally from Arlington and she tends to get a little chillier than he does in the winter. I found it funny that he said that he tends to move to where he will be cooler, so she can change the thermostat to keep her happy. We are all in the market of keeping someone happy- weather it is just keeping yourself happy, or accepting the comfort and happiness of others, it is truly something that is dear to each of us. Happiness.
