Upcycle in your Garden and Green Space
Welcome back the Cowgirl Gardener, Margeaux Denham, as she explains what it means to her to personalize her awesome organic garden space. It doesn’t always mean you have to have all of the space that she has out there in Central Texas, but hey! You can still find things to upcycle, recycle and repurpase in your own garden or patio space. Think about what you could use something for, give it a second life, and more love!- Gen
Re-purposing for your Garden:
If you would like to dress up your garden and help reduce landfills at the same time; here, are a few ideas to keep more from being buried in dump sites. Are you in the market for a trellis? How about using an old headboard, wagon wheel, or bedspring? These are fun, whimsical, and serve a great purpose in the garden. Any climbing plant will thrive on your re-purposed trellis. You can paint them; or just leave the patina on them, ( I prefer the patina myself.) Whether you have a vegetable garden with gourds and squashes or an ornamental garden with flowers and shrubs you could use a strategically placed trellis. Another great idea is to use an old garden gate.
Where to find the goodies
There are many places to find these reusable treasures, they aren’t destined for the dump yet! A good place to find these gems are: estate sales, garage sales, architectural salvage shops, and my personal favorite on corners marked FREE TAKE ME! Don’t forget: old barns, (it is wise to have permission to enter these spaces from the owner.) If you think it is ascetically pleasing, chances are it can be used in your garden.
Bring it full circle
My husband was inspired to use an old wagon wheel on top of a cedar post for our blackberry bush. After he dug a post hole, he topped it with an old wagon wheel that was found laying in an abandoned barn on the property which we live on. As the blackberry has grown we have attached plastic mesh so the brambles of the blackberry would have something to grasp. This arbor works wonderfully! This year we managed to can gallons of blackberry jelly; we put it up for our holiday gifts for our family. Everyone looks forward to our amazing homemade jelly ; and, I look forward to my gardening and culinary adventures.- Margeaux
